Sue Wong Opens LA Fashion Week 2015 with Mythos & Goddesses

Chinese-born designer SUE WONG opened LA Fashion Week along with Beso Moda, MNM Couture, and Zhang Jing Jing on the evening of Monday, March 9th at the annual Art Hearts Fashion Gala held at Taglyan Cultural Complex located at 1201 Vine Street. The 900-person capacity event was sold out by invitation only. VIPs seen on the red carpet prior to Sue Wong’s show included actors Richard Grieco, Sofia Milos, John Savage, and Billy Zane and musicians Larry Dunn (Earth, Wind, and Fire), Chris Pitman (Guns ‘N Roses), and Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue).

Sue Wong’s splendid show kicked off a series of fashion events presented by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. See this year’s Art Hearts schedule at Wong herself held an epic after party at her Malibu mansion The Cedars, formerly owned by Johnny Depp. There the musical guests played the night away until Eos brought in the dawn.

Wong’s huge new Fall/Winter 2015 Mythos & Goddesses Collection embodies the beauty, magic, and transformation that lie at the heart of fashion and the feminine psyche itself. Drawing upon the seminal works of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung, Wong based her designs upon goddess figures from all over the world. “I mythologize my gowns through these Goddess archetypes,” says Wong. She believes that the art of fashion can heal the wearer through an act of collaboration with the creator.

Wong favors the Greek goddesses Aphrodite, Athena, and Artemis as patrons just like the present reporter. Aphrodite is the goddess of love; Athena is the goddess of wisdom; and Artemis is the goddess of the hunt. Aphrodite’s sensuous beauty is reflected in Wong’s soft flowing lines, sophisticated palettes, and sumptuous materials. Athena’s business sense is seen in her versatile monochromes and value added merchandising that have made the Sue Wong brand a global bombshell.

The elusive Artemis manifested herself in the show’s driving music composed by Therion, Virgin Black, The 69 Eyes, Marilyn Manson, Megaherz, Midnight Configuration, and Draconian. Wong’s show opened with Summer Watson singing Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Mal di Luna” and closed with Therion’s “Birth of Venus”. Marika Soderlund-Robison supplied the mythic headpieces courtesy of Kicka Custom Design. The show’s overall concept was inspired by gothic opera according to Wong.

Celebrity guest models Bianca Blanco, Eugenia Kuzmina, Courtney Sixx, and Klara Belen (America’s Next Top Model) all walked the runway and many real life goddesses wore Sue Wong gowns from their personal collections. The Sue Wong Mythos & Goddesses Collection scintillated the Taglyan runway as follows:

lX. Aphrodite, Goddess of Love (White). Gowns: Eugenia, Maryna, Yuliya, Courtney, Amanda, Caitlin, Autumn, and Rina.

The next to last Medusa sequence turned many heads with its eerie underworld shades and elaborate headdresses in the shapes of moons and snakes. Wong chose Medusa as her favorite sequence in the show along with this reporter, confirming her position as LA’s high priestess of fashion. Aphrodite then returned us to the world of the living in a series of bridal-ready white gowns that suggested the Birth of Venus.

For fashion influences Sue Wong is most inspired by the vintage Art Deco designs of the Twenties, Thirties, and Forties with their fancy embellishments and form-conscious lines. She makes these classic elements very much her own with every modern garment, infusing new ideas such as the goddess archetypes into each collection.

The glitz and glamor of Sue Wong’s work belie her humble origins in the remote countryside of Communist China. Her mother bravely bribed a border guard with her wedding jewels for their free passage into Hong Kong. A year later these two strong women reunited with Sue’s father in Los Angeles.

While the family of immigrants struggled financially, young Sue drew her own paper dolls and made her own clothes. An incredible US-based career in fashion design was to follow. Wong has dressed countless celebrities including Jessica Biel, Minnie Driver, Anne Hathaway, Jane Seymour, and Taylor Swift. Sue Wong designs are sold from $385 to $900 nationwide at Bloomingdale’s, Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue as well as internationally in over 27 countries.

Wong is a veritable fountain of knowledge about art history and fashion design.  Her Facebook posts about fellow artists and designers have become great favorites.

On the same date as the Mythos & Goddesses show Wong was awarded a Certificate of Congressional Recognition by Congresswoman Judy Chu of the 27th District.  On March 8th both Wong and Chu had been honored at the 2015 International Women’s Day Awards Gala held by the American Chinese Women’s Federation  (ACWF) along with Madame Ambassador Chen  (wife to Ambassador Liu Jian, China’s Consul General to Los Angeles).  All three women were cited for upholding excellence with their ground-breaking professional achievements.

“We all create our own destiny,” claims Wong.  Experience the magic of Mythos & Goddesses at
